Unions understand Mach

There is only one law.

RULERS DO WHAT THEY WANT.

Rulers, whether government or big corporations, do NOT change their behavior in response to “laws” or “elections” or “protests” or “open letters”. All of those gimmicks are PROVIDED BY THE RULER to keep us occupied and distracted, to maintain our delusional myths about power.

Well, how do you make a ruler do something different? You make him WANT to do something different.

There are exactly two ways to make a ruler WANT something different.

1. War.

2. Blackmail.

War removes the ruler and replaces him with another ruler who will be worse than the original ruler. Not a good goal.

And that brings us back to blackmail.

The writers union, like old-fashioned unions of the Gompers era, understands Machiavelli.

One Day at a Time co-showrunner Mike Royce and WGA negotiating committee member and The Handmaid’s Tale co-showrunner Yahlin Chang spoke to the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) today to tell its board that “the strike exposes your investments to financial risk” and that the AMPTP has been absent from the negotiating table because it wants “to keep their labor costs at rock bottom, while their CEOs hold a race to see who can build the biggest yacht.”

That’s a blackmail note, and not very subtle. Continuing your current behavior EXPOSES YOUR POWER TO RISK.
