Math teacher’s joke

Seen on Quora.

A math teacher met one of his former students in a parking lot. The student parked his Lamborghini next to the teacher’s old Chevy. The surprised teacher said to him: “How can you own a car like that? You were a lousy student.” The ex-student replied: “You see this office building? I bought it for 10 million and sold it for 20 million, so I made a 20% profit, but I can live with that.”

Couple days later, the joke turns out to be uniquely appropriate. Vivek is spewing hatred for America in the standard elite way, saying that we don’t turn out enough THEORETICAL MATH MAJORS to be successful. As I’ve hammered a thousand times, America was successful BEFORE it started stupidly emphasizing theoretical math. Most of our best inventors and scientists and businessmen learned by doing, not by theorizing. After Sputnik we focused entirely on theory, so we no longer have any Morses or Edisons or Fords or Carvers. All of those men started early with physical work, art or telegraphy or steam power or plants.

We can’t possibly compete with India or China in theory. They’re innately better at such subjects. We have to compete in the areas where we KNOW WE CAN WIN because we DID WIN before we went stark raving mad.
