Rang several bells

This little item reprinted on substack caught my attention.

It’s a filler, the sort of thing I used to enjoy in newspapers. Frankfort also rang a bell. It’s straight north of Manhattan, not far from the north end of Tuttle Creek Lake. I don’t think I’ve ever been there, but I used to see the town mentioned from time to time. Checking Google, Frankfort seems to be holding up pretty well for a town that size.

NW Ayer’s 1939 list of papers says the Index was a daily with a circulation of 1500. Also pretty good for a small town. Many towns had weeklies with circ around 300.

Kellogg provided fillers for small papers, and they had a plant in Kansas City. They probably wrote and typeset the above filler.
