When I’m puzzled by motives, I generally assume there’s a hidden purpose, and assume that stupid-looking moves are distractions. With the moves of Craig Wright, I have to reach a simpler conclusion. He’s just dumb. He’s a suer. He enjoys suing.
We already know from many angles and many stories that Wright doesn’t understand software engineering OR social engineering. (For comparison, Sammy is a Grand Master of social engineering.) Wright’s latest failed suit shows that he doesn’t understand either the real purpose or the details of copyright. He tried to claim priority on part of the original bitcoin code:
Judge James Mellor said the file format of Bitcoin – the sequence of a header and list of transactions that together form a block – can’t be treated like a literary work because Wright can’t show how they were first recorded, a test known in copyright law as “fixation.”
Beyond that, the format isn’t a unique development. Every active programmer writes a similar structure when needed, and it’s needed in MANY situations, not just counterfeit “money”. Trying to copyright this structure is like trying to patent a generic bumper or a generic handle.
There’s nothing special about ANY of the bitcoin code.
Wright didn’t bother to form a chain of evidence showing his possession, and didn’t recognize the non-copyrightable nature of the code, and isn’t even using the LAWSUIT for a rational purpose.
Copyrights and patents are about MONEY, not bragging rights. Copyrights and patents are NOT meant to encourage innovation. They are meant to block PROFITABLE COMPETITION. They are meant to protect ownership of a PROFITABLE property for a limited amount of time.
Wright isn’t profiting by this code, and stands no chance of ever profiting. He isn’t like GM blocking synchromesh, or Microsoft blocking operating systems. GM and MS are making actual money from transmissions and operating systems, so they have a good reason to sue competitors.
Craig just enjoys suing.
