Expertly gaming the algo

If you think you’re gaming the system, beware. There’s always somebody who games better than you!

Via Reddit, dozens of TikTok livestreamers are sitting on the sidewalk in one highway underpass. Each is using the same type of circle light, and each is sitting on a low platform. Each is arranged so her camera can’t see the dozens of other identical streamers.

Why? They’re begging for donations. The underpass is in a wealthy neighborhood. Local wealthy people will receive these streams as “Local news for you”, mindlessly selected by SEO algorithms.

There’s obviously a hunger for SHORT content with a local flavor. Local newspapers and local radio stations used to satisfy this hunger with fillers and features, and returned the profit to local advertisers. When local media soiled its own nest for Share Value, TikTok picked up the demand, with the profit going to foreigners.

Don Surber tells the story from an insider viewpoint. He spent most of his career at a local paper, and chronicles its self-destruction in satisfying detail.
