Not snark

Yahoo Financial was interviewing an expert on gold and silver. Announcer asked “Gold is the boomer metal. What’s the millenial metal? Is it lithium, or the other rare metals that go into EVs?”

My instant snarky answer was BITCOIN!

The expert’s NON-SNARKY answer was BITCOIN!

We’re fucked.

More seriously, The Ankler has a thoughtful article about the trapped feeling of millenials in Hollywood. It makes two points: (1) Entertainment, like the government, is run by boomers who have no succession plan and no intention of retiring. (2) Silicon Valley, for all of its manifest evils, doesn’t have this problem. Many of the founders retired VERY early, and the biggest ones (Bezos, Gates, Schmidt) have already handed off power to properly trained and prepared successors.

When I started to work in 1970, the generational pattern was similar. Most of my bosses were two generations older than me, same age as my grandparents. The middle generation, in their 40s, should have been in charge, but couldn’t dislodge the 60 and 70 year old bosses.

Later: The Ankler extended the discussion in this thoughtful podcast. They also offer some Graybill-type wisdom about globalization. Hollywood is totally global now, and eagerly goes along with China’s cultural requirements. Dialog is rewritten and characters are deleted to satisfy China’s censors.

Hollywood also encounters cultural conflict inside USA, such as DeSantis attempting to reassert normal state taxing authority. The discussers DIDN’T observe the difference between China and Florida. Disney HATES American cultural and governmental restrictions, VIOLENTLY rebels against them, and wins. China is in charge.

Graybill says that the colonial master country always determines which skills and arts will be available in the slave countries. Any skill or business that competes with the master is dead.
