Big Tech still relies on human judgment, but it CAN’T POSSIBLY TOLERATE hiring Americans and paying them decent money. So it hires cheap slaves in Africa. These slaves have a moral sense, unlike ChatGPT, and their moral sense is bombarded by constant contact with angry Americans. Why are the Americans angry? Because we’ve been kicked out of useful jobs by the same tech tyrants who abuse the African slaves.
Did Mabel get upset or traumatized by dealing with angry customers? Upset yes, traumatized no. Why? Mabel had a union.
A 1920 journal of the telephone operators branch of IBEW eloquently describes the real fight at that time. Operators were being displaced by automatic dialing. They were PROUD of their ability to handle human situations, because they were INVOLVED in the handling as ADULTS. They weren’t censoring every word that every customer said. They weren’t SUPPOSED to listen to every word every customer said. They were only supposed to make the connections in an intelligent human way.
The union was entirely female, and the union officials were all women. The journal includes a couple of clarion calls from Gompers of AFL, but otherwise no male input.
This passage illustrates how they dealt with “hate speech”.

Next time your presumably shell-like ear is assailed with sibilantly wrathful appraisals of your particularly low average of intelligence, even for a telephone operator, be tolerant. Don’t flounce off the line with your accustomed hauteur. Remember the historic telephone crank is passing, even as you and I. Let him live his few brief days, only twenty-five years more sport for him, [CHECK!] then our all too human errors will be eliminated and a chill, steel thing, unresponsive to his praise or blame, will give him the coldly efficient service he demands if he has sense enough to dial correctly.
How language will be impoverished! And how our power of repartee will depart from us. Exercised mentally at present of course. And when our usefulness has been outlived, our “service no longer required,” when there are no more telephone heroines quick, calm, humanly eager and sympathetic in emergency, when we have been replaced by an attachment to the telephone instrument, when the public, that never could know and never could understand anyway, will be doing its own operating, consider this compensation and rejoice there will be no next generation of young and irreverent ops to laugh at our pictures, adorning retiring-room walls, even as we have laughed at the last generation.

Electronic automation, from Strowger to Microsoft Word to OpenAI, mainly displaces women. The modern feminist movement WORKS FOR THE DISPLACERS. Feminists tell women that they shouldn’t be secretaries or operators or wives or mothers. Feminists agitate to move women into coal mines and fire departments, where they are innately less qualified for the job.
The journal also helps to answer one of my long-standing questions. Why was Harding able to wipe out most of Wilson’s tyrannical agencies? Why did the country turn neutral for 25 years? Partly because unions were on Harding’s side. From the Gompers article:
= = = = = START QUOTE:
Ninety-three per cent of all the nation’s present revenue goes toward paying for past wars or toward military preparations and maintaining the present army and navy forces. Only seven per cent remains for the maintenance of all the other departments of government. In these days of millions and billions, figures come to mean less and less for we are, for the most part, unable to realize these colossal sums. But all of us can understand that seven per cent for constructive purposes and ninety-three per cent for destructive purposes is all out of balance. Add to
this the fact that every adult citizen in the United States is faced with the probability of paying taxes on the present national war debt for the rest of his
lifetime, and we have a depressing glimpse of war costs and their results.
Besides the great loss of life, the unfortunates who will go through life maimed
and crippled, the loss and destruction of property in the battle areas and the
general paralization of business, war has another disastrous effect: it creates in
the public mind the fallacy that the nation with the greatest amount of armament
is the greatest nation. The mad race for superdreadnaughts, larger aeroplanes,
more submarines, bigger standing armies, with the huge expenditure which these entail, is taken for granted; the idea enters into the national psychology.
President Harding’s invitation to the large nations of the world to a disarmament conference to be held in Washington comes as the first indication of the nations’ realization that there must be limitation of armaments.
This plan, which may provide for a limitation of armament on the part of the great
Powers through an amicable agreement to stop at a stated amount, to cease the further construction of the tools of war, will, it is hoped, answer the old argument that each nation must keep up with or just ahead of her nearest rival.
In the past war women assumed a larger part than in any previous war and it is generally conceded that in the event of another war the woman will bear a still heavier burden. [CHECK!] She must be reluctant to do this. Woman’s mission is to create, to build; her whole nature rebels at the needless destruction of war. The women of the United States have the opportunity now to make known their attitude, to make known to not only the members of the disarmament conference, but to the whole world , the fact that America’s womanhood understands that disarmament is the first step toward ending war, the first step toward destroying the war psychology and substituting therefor “Peace on earth, good will toward men .”

Admittedly the Strowger story is complicated. According to legend, Alton Strowger was pissed at an operator who seemed to be handing calls to his competitor. He invented the dialing system to replace Mabel, and succeeded. But then the tech tyrants brought back a UNIVERSALLY CORRUPT version of Mabel, partly computerized and partly manipulated behind the scenes by those African slaves. All calls, and all human activities, are constantly monitored to hand all business to favored companies and favored doctrines, and to demonetize unfashionable companies and unfashionable beliefs.

Relevant sidenote: From Harding’s speech to the disarmament conference.

I can speak officially only for our United States. Our hundred millions frankly want less of armament and none of war. Wholly free from guile, sure in our own minds that we harbor no unworthy designs, we accredit the world with the same good intent. So I welcome you, not alone in good will and high purpose, but with high faith.
We are met for a service to mankind. In all simplicity, in all honesty and all honor, there may be written here the avowals of world conscience refined by the consuming fires of war, and made more sensitive by the anxious aftermath. I hope for that understanding which will emphasize the guarantees of peace, and for commitments to less burdens and a better order which will tranquilize the world. In such an accomplishment there will be added glory to your flags and ours, and the rejoicing of mankind will make the transcending music of all succeeding time.

Irrelevant sidenote: The union journal has lots of union housekeeping. It lists all the locals, notes changes in officers, and lists the card numbers of members who are behind on their dues. As you’d expect, the locals are in sizable cities, with one exception.

Bellows Falls is just a crossroads, and the listed officers actually live in Brattleboro. Why did Bellows Falls have a large enough telephone exchange to need a union local? Hetty Green.
