This WSJ piece doesn’t ask WHETHER ruling lunatics are totally wacked out on LSD and magic mushrooms. The reporters start with their understanding (which is NOT widely known!) that everyone in power is zonked all the time. They discuss WHY the ruling lunatics feel it’s necessary to lose their minds.
Here’s why: Venture capitalists pressure tech startups for more Innovative Disruption, and tech tyrants have found that drug-induced lunacy is what the VCs mean by Innovative Disruption.

In the ’50s all ‘regular’ powerful people were falling-down drunk. Drugs other than alcohol were unthinkably horrible and criminal. This attitude comes across clearly in cop shows where the police heroes are smoking and drinking up a storm, semi-conscious from alcohol, while ferociously pursuing peddlers of the WRONG type of drugs.
New thought:
This looked like hypocrisy, but it was really just a way of reserving the WRONG drugs for the RIGHT people. Can’t have the courtiers sharing the supply of superpowers, can we?
