When used by pure fraudsters like Wright, they block normal business. Bitcoin is a purely dishonest business, so blocking its progress is a good thing in the long run. But Wright is also manufacturing patents against other digital technologies, a few of which may be marginally less than 100% evil.

The Selden pool started as a pure fraud and ended up as a trade association for Everyone But Ford. Selden cultivated the trade group because it was good for their own profits, but it was ALSO good as a counterforce against Ford, who fully intended to become the sole carmaker.
