Super-random thought about mental jukeboxes.
Lately I’ve noticed that my jukebox starts the day with a fresh piece. Sometimes it’s one of the regular buttons but not the top hits. Sometimes it starts with a song that is obviously stored in the cerebellum but never shows up on the buttons. A couple days ago it started with the Radetzky March, played all the way through. Today it started with Down By The Riverside.
At the end of the day the jukebox is reduced to one of the two or three top hits (Anna Magdalena or Haydn’s Creation or Yellow Rose) all flattened out and simplified. Worst of all it sometimes ends with a meaningless sequence of four or five notes repeated endlessly, the musical equivalent of Etcetera Etcetera Etcetera.
When I notice consciously that it’s flattened and dull, I try to recharge by pushing a less familiar button, but the fresh item doesn’t stick, and quickly falls back to Etcetera Etcetera Etcetera.
Seems like an interesting topic for research. Everyone has a jukebox. How many tunes are typically on the top row? How many total tunes? Stored as performed audio or stored as notes?
