Always wait for experience

You shouldn’t try to think about areas where you have no experience.

This week’s “news” includes a pop artist who stopped her show and lectured the audience for taking selfies in the crowd. I have ZERO EXPERIENCE with pop concerts or selfies, so I didn’t have a REAL opinion. My first STUPID inclination was to favor the performer because the “news” article made it look like she was right.

EnidBuzz gets into a lively argument with both sides capably represented.

After reading the pro-audience side, I quickly saw the analogy with more familiar experiences.

Stokowski once stopped a concert to lecture his audience on proper appreciation for avant-garde crap. We’re shoving this poison down your throats, and you will bend over and take it! Stop complaining about the poison! In that case I had no trouble seeing the audience side.

More recently, I’ve dropped subscriptions or contributions to writers who mock their commenters.

Same principle in all cases. The audience is PAYING, so they should be receiving ENTERTAINMENT, not contempt. If the performer was paying the audience, she could treat them like employees.
