Not that kind of store

Via Protos: Canada is requesting bids to develop a system to “store” bitcoin for local police. The headline and description imply secure storage of the private key numbers after cops seize them.

Struck me as odd. Storing a number isn’t a problem. You just have to keep it away from the web where anyone can find it and alter it. Write it to CD, or print it on paper and keep the paper in a secure fireproof safe. Most businesses and cop shops already have good paper storage and good backup systems. No development needed.

Looking at the finer details, this isn’t about storage at all. It’s meant to develop a sting, a bitcoin transaction system under the control of the local cops. Same as an undercover drug seller, or a police-controlled nail salon that resembles the nail salons used by smuggling gangs.

The whole bitcoin system was designed as a sting from the start. The ‘dark web’ was designed as a sting from the start. The entire fucking web was designed as a sting from the start.

So the only unusual part here is letting local cops run the fake nail salon instead of NSA/CIA/FBI.
