DeSantis STILL hasn’t mentioned his GIGANTIC REAL COURAGEOUS ACHIEVEMENT. Even the fucking Pence campaign has come out (cautiously) against lockdowns and ballgags, for Christ’s sweet sake.
A hostile Floridian on Reddit probably gave the correct explanation. Like all the others, DeSantis is not running for president. DeSantis is term-limited and knows that Trump is the hereditary king, so he’s just casting around at random, trying to stay in the political realm. He’s appealing to the think-tank donors, not to humans who enjoy breathing and working.

More broadly, politics has lost succession. Life at all levels aims to keep our genes or our culture running. Guilds and executives concentrate on passing skills and knowledge to the next generation, keeping the abstract genes alive.
Modern politics has busted the chain. In non-term-limit jobs, the current holder just stays there until several years after death, smashing all possible successors instead of cultivating them. (This technique was recommended by Machiavelli and described by Parkinson.)
In term-limit jobs, the current holder concentrates on his own revolving door future, moving into lobbyist or think-tank positions until the next chance at a bigger political job.
