Social media isn’t monolithic.

One of my father’s science parables:

All Aztec Indians walk single-file. At least the one I saw did.

Lately I’ve been noticing a vague distinction, which sharpened up after Substack introduced its twitteroid ‘Notes’ feature. Now Substack is much more like Twitter, packed with meaningless and VICIOUS disputes between meaningless ideological differences. Before this shift I could find more “non-driven” people writing about a variety of subjects. Now the “non-drivens” are fading out, oppressed and offended by the vicious snipers who came in to enjoy the twitteroid atmosphere.

Facebook has never been that way. At least the few FB pages I regularly visit.

Most of the commenters are ordinary people expressing ordinary feelings, and nearly all of their feelings are cynically realistic about all elite concerns, from politics to “virus” to criminals. They’re solid Machiavellians, though most of them have probably never heard the name.
