Crime Nonbark

Just in time for the mayoral “election”, Woodward is claiming to make progress against crime.

Property crime is down nearly 15 percent downtown through three-quarters of the year while overall crime is down more than 10 percent.

The Violent Crimes Task Force has arrested more than 150 of the most dangerous and prolific offenders.

The expanded Homeless Outreach Team has made more consistent service connections and is on pace to remove more than 800,000 pounds of litter and debris this year.

My first response was automatic dismissal. The usual campaign shit.

But wait… Compare the situation now against six months ago. In fact there’s less wildness, less leftover food and random stuff scattered around, less beggars. Criminality reached a peak in the first half of this year, and my perception stayed with the peak.

Nonbark is always harder to distinguish than bark, but the difference is meaningful.

I still can’t “vote” for Inslee’s cheerful assistant torturer, but I can feel positive about the change now that I recognize it. More evidence that governments are trying to restore trust.
