Simmering 2

The simmering metaphor in previous item reminded me of a picture I’ve been wanting to make.

Back in 1970 when I got out of prison, my first experience with independent life was in this duplex in Stillwater.

My Zenith Trans-Oceanic helped to pull me out of the walls and back into the larger world. I was also learning how to cook in vegetarian style without any cookbooks or Youtube tutorials. Most males in that era were NOT trained to cook by school or parents.

I’ve been cooking for myself ever since, except for some years in the ’80s when I was working long hours and relied on restaurants. Most of the time I’ve been mostly vegetarian, but no longer trying for purity or morality. My gut simply doesn’t handle big doses of animal fat.

Now I’m trying for a more analog life, trying to get out of the digital walls and the more literal “virus” holocaust walls, so the duplex has become a symbol of independence and autonomy. Cooking is a big part of an analog life. More time in the kitchen chopping and preparing food means less time at the computer and more connection to muscles and senses.

This change came to my door in the form of a live saleswoman a couple months ago. She was pitching Full Circle, an organic food delivery company that buys from small farms in Oregon and California. I appreciated the live analog sales approach, so I tried the service immediately. They deliver a box every two weeks, with your selection from the available products.

After three boxes I feel confident enough to recommend the company. It’s all good, well selected and definitely fresh from the farm. I already get fresh veg at Safeway, but without a car I have a weight limit. Potatoes and fresh broccoli are heavy! The delivery makes it possible to stock up without straining my old feet. Also, supporting small farmers expands the analog world in general.

I had never used fresh potatoes before. They add substance and seem to add some nutrients I’ve been lacking. Eating one potato per day, I’m feeling better in general and the vestibular system is definitely behaving better. This makes sense because potatoes have lots of potassium, which is specifically recommended to improve fluid control in the cochlea.

Maybe it’s placebo instead of potassium, but in any case I’m having more analog fun now.
