Big Entertainment is fading. The tech tyrants who bought it know it’s fading. They’re happy to let it fade. That’s why they bought it. LBO.
The Hollywood unions acquired solid contracts from the dying dinosaur, but the contracts don’t mean much. The contracts will help the dinosaur to fade, and the tech tyrants will be happy to blame the unions for their own Creative Destruction.
Many actors and writers have already found a fairly successful living in the newer and more fragmented media, but their position in Youtube or Tiktok or Substack is far more delicate than the already unionized jobs in Hollywood and the Three Networks.
If unions really want to protect and advance the skills and security of their members, they should be thinking about the new mammalian world, not the old reptilian world. The old-fashioned Union Shop approach won’t work. Freezing up the New Media will simply cause Even Newer Media to develop.
Union members are tremendously creative. A giant reservoir of EXPERIENCE-BASED ideas is available for examination and sorting. A cameraman who has been working with Rumble influencers already has ideas about how the job could be made more secure. The actors and techs already know which steps are likely to improve security and which steps would be counterproductive.
