Smart idea

This Natl Assn of Mfrs film features a clever way of simultaneously training teachers and researchers. Arthur D Little Co performed various types of research for companies that couldn’t afford a fulltime lab.

Little was arranging job swaps with schools. The trainees would alternate a semester teaching science then a semester working in Little’s labs. Result was lab workers who knew how to communicate their results, and teachers with real world science experience. The film says Little was primarily aiming to develop teachers, not its own workers.

Little is still in the consulting business, but I doubt they could do the swap routine now. Academia and teacher unions are rigidly opposed to experience.
