Most of our current notions about past portrayals of race and gender are idiotic and delusional.
I’ve always appreciated Mantan Moreland’s character in the Charlie Chan movies.
This movie caught my attention immediately with a chase scene involving a Bantam panel truck. I can’t resist Bantams.


Moreland serves the same function here as in the Chan series. He’s the adult trying to domesticate an immature wild white dude.
The grounding influence was common for black characters in the ’30s. Fibber McGee’s black maid Beulah exerted the same type of gravity. Fibber would get involved in silly schemes, and Beulah would try to ground him.
If this is a stereotype, it seems like a pretty favorable stereotype. Why would you complain about being portrayed as mature and wise?
