Somebody is having fun

Now that I’ve finally got a working landline again, I’ve been making a few calls to unsubscribe from various services.

Back around 1998 when I first switched to Comcast internet and gave up the old musical modem, I decided to add a second web service for backup. I chose PeoplePC for some reason, and might have used it once or twice when AOL wasn’t working. Later it became a brand under Earthlink, which still exists though it’s no longer a major portal. The billing continued every month for 25 years. Through most of the years it was around $3, which didn’t seem worth the trouble of calling to unsubscribe. Recently it rose to $9, which seemed like it was worth the trouble.

Finally called the number this morning and went through the usual 30 minutes of call center crap. I think the cancellation worked, but won’t know until I see next month’s Visa statement.

The Indian call center girl gave her “name” as “Jennifer Stones”. I think the people who assign those “names” must be having fun. In an earlier online chat with CenturyLink, one of the operators was “named” “Whinenona Chels”. Even more fun.

A month later, sure enough the unsubscribe worked. The latest credit card statement is zero.
