Writing to US district judge Lewis Kaplan, who is overseeing SBF’s sentencing, Carmine Simpson, who is currently incarcerated alongside Bankman-Fried, claimed, “I have had the honor to have gotten to know Sam over the past six months.”
He added, “Sam is the most selfless person that I have ever had the privilege to meet,” and claims that “the world would be better with Bankman-Fried out of jail.” He then reasons that “incarceration would serve no benefit.”
According to Simpson, one of the biggest “examples of Sam’s character” is that he has remained committed to his vegan diet of “undercooked rice, a scoop of disgusting-looking beans, and week-old brown lettuce.” The letter also details how he has become a target of “hazing, harassment, and assault more so than the average inmate.”

If he’s really a “target”, it’s because he’s stingy. Weak guys with money are “targets” until they start paying for protection. As long as he follows NYC tradition of never paying anyone for anything, he will be a “target”. That’s how jail works. Pay for service. Protection is just business. Been there, done that, got the rapes.
It’s more likely that Sammy persuaded this Carmine dude to work for him. That’s how Sammy works. Effective Altruism is just business.
The jail style of protection racket is a vastly less harmful business than the Effective Altruism style of protection racket. Jail is retail, Effective Altruism recruits entire countries to serve the cult.
Effective Altruism is the modern equivalent of the Crusades. Fight for the ruler, sacrifice your life to enrich and empower the ruler, and get paid in the afterlife. In EA the afterlife is even stupider than the medieval version. When you died for the pope or the king, you were buying a bond** which would be redeemed in YOUR afterlife. With EA, you’re not buying a bond that Jesus will repay to YOU. Instead you’re buying a bond ON BEHALF OF some random unknown people who may or may not exist a thousand years from now. They will be repaid by your death.

** Indulgences were ETFs on Crusader bonds. Instead of giving your own life to protect the Pope from Infidels, you were betting on a soldier who gave his own life. Carbon offsets are ETFs on Gaia bonds. Instead of sacrificing your own company to protect the Planet from Deplorables, you’re betting on a company that loses its own life.
