One of the checker ladies at Safeway is WAY too helpful.
On a previous storetrip she took 10 minutes explaining how to use all, and I mean ALL, of the options available in Safeway’s cellphone app, to a competent-looking young man who probably didn’t need all that information.
Today she first spent 5 minutes talking with a confused old lady who had brought in a charging plug from a Tesla for some ungodly reason. Why you’d expect Safeway to help with a Tesla charging plug will forever remain a mystery. Finally she passed that question off to the customer service desk, who should have grabbed it in the first place.
Then she spent another 10 minutes with another confused lady who was trying to buy one huge complete PINEAPPLE and a $30 package of pork, using a food stamp card which didn’t have enough money left. The lady first decided to return the pineapple, then decided to return the $30 pork, and finally somehow ended up paying for the pork.
Both days the delay caused me to miss the bus and wait 15 minutes for the next bus.
HOWEVER! I’m sure as hell NOT going to complain about this. I DO NOT WANT TO CAUSE AN EMPLOYEE TO GET IN TROUBLE FOR BEING HELPFUL, even if the helpfulness could have been shortened a bit. Employees should get in trouble for being nasty, NOT for being helpful. We have way too much nastiness and way too little helpfulness in these insane confused times.

Speaking of insane confused times, Taggart’s latest interview expressed it perfectly. “Everyone is running on intellectual vapors.”
Creative people have run out of creative juices, and ordinary people have dropped below the level of basic functioning.
