1936 fiberoptics

Perusing some of Gernsback’s magazines, noticed this in Radio News for June 1936.

The article doesn’t give a brand, so this may have been a prototype or ‘concept radio’ for a display, rather than a mass-produced receiver. The dial had a map of Europe in the middle. As you tuned across the dial, a miniature lamp on the pointer illuminated the ends of glass fibers, each leading to a dot on the map. This was possible in Europe because major broadcasters had unique SW frequencies. It wouldn’t have worked as well in USA where broadcasters were confined to the narrower AM band, and only a few were clear channel or nationally unique.

This was genuine fiberoptics, though not with a laser source.
