Metaphor misses

Growth is the Wall Street mantra. Go big or go home. The crime market insists on growth of cash flow, with a negative correlation to profit.

In real life you don’t want endless growth. Endless growth is CANCER.

In real life you ALSO don’t want to survive by merging into a larger body. Merging into a larger body is DIGESTION.

In real corporate life, success usually came from going small, not from going big. I told the stories of several small automobile makers who succeeded by finding their own unique niche. Some of them are still running today, making specialized fire rescue systems or providing components for GM. The small makers who tried to go big, emulating GM, failed fast.

New thought: The dinosaur vs mammal metaphor is unavoidable in this context. Dinosaurs got too large, so small mammals inherited the earth.

But the metaphor misses the more important truth…..

THE DINOSAURS THEMSELVES SURVIVED BY GOING SMALL. They turned into birds.
