Yesterday a local house-buying scam sent me an awfully realistic-looking fake check for the appraised value of my house. It had my name, the name of the company, and an amount, all filled in properly. The letter said that I could “turn this into an actual check” by letting them buy the house.
Why would I want to sell? A new house would cost 3 times as much, and I’d get a mortgage longer than my probable remaining lifespan.
This house was built in 1948 and I was built in 1949. We’re both aging together in parallel.
Tight joints are getting loose.
Loose joints are getting tight.
Every move is accompanied by a groan.
Valves are leaking and dripping.
Surfaces are getting rough and hard to clean.
Also, the house and I are related through a peculiar coincidence. The first owner had been a neighbor of my grandfather in Missouri before 1910. There’s no other connection, since I’m the only member of my family who moved into this part of the country.
