Today I Learned.
I’ve lived in this house for exactly 33 years as of yesterday, and never realized until just now that the city sewer treatment plant is only 3000 feet away as the crow flies. That’s closer than Safeway and shorter than some of my regular walks. I always knew the plant was in this part of town but never stopped to measure it.
The crow is meaningless because the plant is WAY DOWN at the bottom of the river gorge, so the shortest car trip is 5 miles.
How did crows get into the idiom? They’re not famous for long straight flights. Crows hang around menacingly in trees and swoop down to catch a mouse or harass a cat. The idiom should be as the goose flies.
