Alien non-empathy

The auto companies agreed on the definition of the Conservative Prospect. He likes economy and simplicity and plain things.

Mormon Romney understood the type personally, so Rambler training films had an empathetic attitude. The other companies saw the Conservative Prospect as an inferior species, to be tolerated when necessary to meet a sales quota. Salesmen and managers are Stepup Prospects by definition, so they only understand other status seekers.

In this clip Ford tries to encourage the salesman to go after the Mainline buyer and the six buyer, but without much enthusiasm or comprehension.

First they miss Ford’s UNIQUE attraction to the Conservative Prospect: The manual choke. It’s not mentioned at all. Other cars gave up the manual choke before 1949, while Ford kept it on base models and Falcons well into the ’60s. I learned this connection in ’62 from my dying grandpa. He understood the type and tried to give me a quick Conservative Prospect training course to counteract my Stepup Prospect parents who didn’t understand the type.

Second, the Ford sales films missed a broader Ford attraction. Country folks, including reservation Natives, learned to love the T for practical reasons, and continued to favor Fords after most of the T’s qualities were lost. Stepups are required to mock and deride country folks, whether they really feel the contempt or not.
