Lately I’ve been using the car dealer castes as clarifiers.
Dealers had three categories. Conservative Prospects were interested in simplicity and reliability, uninterested in status. Step-up Prospects were interested in flashy impressive status. Luxury Prospects wanted lasting quality and didn’t care much about flash.
The Prospects correlate perfectly with the ancient castes and Orwell’s party castes.
| Auto | Ancient | Orwell |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative Prospect | Peasant | Prole |
| Step-up Prospect | Courtier | Outer Party |
| Luxury Prospect | Aristocrat | Inner Party |
I left one obvious question unanswered. How does this connect with the political labels? Where do the Conservative Prospects belong?
First approximation: No connection, at least in modern times. The two parties have no ideology at all, trading pet issues back and forth every few years like stocks and bonds.
Second approximation: All politics is conducted by the courtiers, the Step-up Prospects, the status seekers. They trade noise and flash to gain favor with the Luxury Prospects. They pay no attention to the Conservative Prospects.
Historically there was some correlation with the original meanings of left and right. The faction on the right was the Step-ups, engaging in politics for the privilege of kissing the king’s ass and receiving land and power. The faction on the left was trying to represent farmers and laborers, the Conservative Prospects.
FDR returned to this form for a while. FDR was the traditional Left, representing farmers and factory workers, tightly restraining Wall Street. Repooflicans were the Step-ups, competing for the privilege of kissing Rockefeller’s ass and receiving land and power. Since FDR’s death nobody represents the Conservative Prospects at all.
