Reminds me…

Both sides are trading nastiness about the military records of Vance and Walz. Online folks are digging into the details to “present the evidence” on both sides. Onliners seem to be having fun, but the whole thing is utterly irrelevant.

Reminds me of the Dan Rather vs Bush mess in 2004. I got into blogging by participating in that “evidence” as a mindless partisan Repooflican. It was sort of fun, but after I started writing my own blog steadily, the process of laying out organized thoughts broke through my partisan blindness. I gradually realized that Bush wasn’t on our side at all. He was serving other masters, especially Saudi.

Rather was basically right about Bush’s service, but it DIDN’T MATTER. The only thing that mattered was Bush’s treason as president.

The same rule applies here. If Vance and Walz were applying for an officer rank inside the military, their service records would matter. Now they’re applying for a political job, so only their political records matter.

The thousand voters who really vote aren’t necessarily reading online “evidence”. They’re reading what the political operatives carefully feed them. The operatives know which precincts will decide the election, and they know how to sway those few precincts.
