A long time ago I got permanently tired of the word flipflop. Both sides use it all the time as an insult when the opponent CHANGES HIS MIND IN RESPONSE TO CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES.
Responding to change is what LIVING THINGS do.
NEGATIVE FEEDBACK IS LIFE.
Remaining the same through all changes is what INANIMATE OBJECTS do.
When politicians are required to do the same thing every time, nothing can ever improve. The whole system is lifeless.
As CH Smith points out, an overgrown bureaucracy has the same effect. It forces everyone to stay within an endless set of multiply overlapping and contradictory procedures and compliances. Enviro lunacy, Die-Verse lunacy, Indigenous First Nations lunacy, Ninth Circuit decision lunacy, etc. The only safe reaction is no reaction.

Later and better thought: There are times when governments SHOULD stand back and do nothing. The proper question is not change vs non-change, but the direction of the RESULT. What actually happens? Does the result help or hurt ordinary people?
