Somebody in a Catholic forum was saying that Reason helps us to defend against emotions or fashions.
Nope, it’s backwards.
When I’m trying out various theories or explanations for a health problem or a programming problem, the “rational” mind instantly and easily develops a chain of “logic” that explains how this theory works for the problem. Eventually, through experience and experimentation, I find the real answer. Reason didn’t help me get there. In fact, Reason often slows down the experimentation because it feels like a satisfying answer and relieves the itch for more trials.
Incidentally, when I googled to find the usual phrasing of this backwards saying, I typed “Reason is a” and Google autofilled Reason is a slave to the passions, which is a CORRECT proverb.
