Business makes civilization

Right now the Democrat establishment is showing what happens when you’re accustomed to dealing with only one customer, the government.

If any of them had ever WORKED in a real business, let alone RUN a business, they couldn’t hold this attitude. When you depend on customers you can’t afford to piss off half the customers or threaten to kill half the customers. You can reject a known thief or a persistent troublemaker, but you CAN’T reject an entire class of people. You have to tolerate unfashionable and heretical people.

And after you receive the pleasant feedback of money and GRATITUDE from people who are accustomed to being treated like dirt, you genuinely feel warmer toward those people. Business creates civilization. Government agencies destroy civilization.

Too many of our corporations also deal solely with government. Ike was talking about this in his famous speech. In 1958 aircraft and electronics companies were gravitating toward the security of cost-plus defense contracts and leaving the ‘risky’ consumer products to Japan.

Later, James Zogby has a good inside view of the problem.

When he was young, the party was more like a lodge. Members had frequent local meetings where they discussed and listened. They were in direct touch with other voters, and their decisions influenced the national party. Now it’s solely run by consultants and staff, who are permanent bureaucrats. Their pay doesn’t depend on pleasing customers. They get paid whether the party wins or not. He’s been a member of the central committee for many years, and he says that even at the top level the committee isn’t allowed to make decisions. They vote on some new direction for the party, and then the staff simply ignores what the members want.
