New thought. This might be a rule, but it’s certainly a sharp distinction.
The people who have left the sinking ships of old institutions divide into two camps. Some of them want to pull the ship out of the water, others are happy to let it sink so they can live and work free of its bad influence.
Matt Taibbi is the former type. He’s convinced that the Press was formerly a holy and untainted font of pure objectivity, and wants to bring it back to pre-Eden purity, which exists only in his naive mind.
Ted Gioia, previously a wheeler-dealer and consultant for billionaires, is more in the latter camp. He recognizes the permanent failure of big institutions and devotes his writing to cultivating and praising the new decentralized setup.
Do the two camps have different goals? Do the salvagers want to get back in the captain’s cabin and put their hands on the wheel again?
