Trump has given both Canada and Mexico a reprieve from the tariffs after both have agreed to work together with USA in fighting fentanyl.
Fentanyl is the BIGGEST immediate problem, or at least the BIGGEST problem that CAN be solved. Our lack of factories is a much longer-lasting problem, and the crisis with fentanyl and other suicides is secondary to our total Wall Street economy. Nevertheless, better control of drugs will remove one of the consequences of our long-term failure.
Our local and state governments are also failing to deal with homelessness and drugs. This won’t help them to become more competent, but it could relieve the worst pressure.
At the moment it looks like the tariffs were just a hardass negotiating tactic to pull both sides toward a solution. If the appearance turns out to be correct after the dust settles, Trump will be SOLVING one real problem. He stopped the SOLUTIONS to monopolies that were making pretty good progress under the Biden admin, so he still hasn’t done more good than harm; but this looks like one score for the good side.
A secondary good effect: Canada’s politicians and media are starting to remember what they lost when they surrendered to Free Trade. Canada used to have pride in its local designs and local content. I hope they’ll continue working in the correct direction after the immediate threat subsides. They will then be LESS vulnerable to future threats.
