If Canada wants…

If Canada wants a REALLY BIG self-sufficiency project, they could build a pipeline to Europe. As I’ve noted before, there isn’t a lot of open ocean between Canada and Ireland. Ellesmere to Greenland to Iceland to Ireland would include frequent landfalls. The technology was already developed by Russia’s Nordstream, about the same length as the longest jump on that route.

Transpacific might be more profitable but it’s tremendously longer with no breaks.

Transatlantic telegraph and telephone cables have been running since 1880. They required a huge investment and a huge amount of research and experimentation in cable-laying methods and maintenance-free relays and amplifiers. A pipeline could follow one of them to take advantage of a known path.

Canada is trying to emphasize its advantages. CBC describes a major difference between Canada and US in poultry and egg production. Canada kept a New Deal-style farm regulation system, aiming to maintain as many producers as possible for diversification. US smashed the New Deal in the 80s, resulting in monopoly. US has 200 major egg producers in a small area, while Canada has a more widespread 1000 producers for 1/8 the population. An epidemic can take out most of our production and OFTEN DOES.
