Romantic vs engineer

Someone posted a picture of a snowy mountain with a dense pine forest in the background, and a railroad track with a freight train in the foreground.

He described it as a beautiful Nature scene marred by an ugly human artifact.

I see the EXACT OPPOSITE.

The train is BEAUTIFUL because it’s a crucial and timeless part of infrastructure. The overall pattern hasn’t changed much since 1880. The locomotive and boxcars looked the same in 1950.

The stuff in the background is UGLY. Snow is dangerous to walk on and causes ice dams and collapsed roofs. Pine trees burn and fall, destroying houses and killing people and breaking the infrastructure for days or weeks.

USEFULNESS is beautiful. Things that ruin usefulness are ugly.
