A 1969 promo film declares as an established fact that microwave ovens are yet another fine spinoff of our Capitalist Space Program, yet more evidence that Capitalism Beats Socialism because we hit the moon faster. Microwave ovens were invented to help the astronauts cook while in space.

Debunk 1. The space program had no spinoffs. All of the claims are blatantly fraudulent. Microwave ovens were used commercially LONG before Apollo.

Diathermy was a very old practice in industrial and medical applications. The caption implies that cooking by diathemy was already familiar, but this was newly suitable for home cooks making “bun sandwiches”. [Was hamburger trademarked? Apparently not, but cheeseburger was trademarked.]
Restaurants were starting to use HF ovens in 1960. I remember trying an electronic “bun sandwich” in a roadside cafe in western Kansas, hardly a high-tech center! The oven was fascinating, but the “bun sandwich” was too dry and tasted wrong.

Debunk 2. Our space program had NOTHING TO DO with capitalism. It was purely a federal project, mostly developed inhouse by NASA with assistance from captive contractors like Boeing and Lockheed.
As Ike pointed out in 1958, those contractors were NO LONGER CAPITALIST. They were STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES, almost entirely dependent on government purchases of their products. They built what the military wanted, and got paid WITHOUT RISK by the military. They were not betting or taking risks as real businesses do.
Most of our economy is now STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES. Computers STARTED as a government project, with Hollerith’s 1890 machine for the Census Bureau. IBM was part of Deepstate from the start, working closely with the intel agencies to invade innocent countries.
Electronics started as proper capitalism then became SOE in the 50s and 60s, leaving real capitalism to Japan and China.
The banking sector was taken over by the government in 2008 through TARP, first a Bush project then rebranded by Obama.
The medical sector was taken over in 2010 through the HERITAGE FOUNDATION PROJECT called Romneycare, also rebranded by Obama.
We still have some real capitalism in smaller enterprises, just as the Soviet system had real capitalism in small business and modern China is 98% real capitalist.
Now, of course, the finance and electronics and spaceflight sectors are united in One Holy Trinity, The Most Noble And Omniscient And Omnipotent Elon, Hallowed Be His Eternally Blessed Name.
It would be more accurate to call Elon a State-Owning Enterprise.
