Rant on “cybersecurity”

Forcing us to change a password every month is like the old ’50s Loyalty Oaths.

The oaths were NOT meant to catch real Russian spies.

First, real spies for any country are expert liars.  They have no compunction about faking an oath to maintain a cover.  Spying is lying.

Second, the KGB, like all professional spy agencies, was painstakingly careful and reticent. They had to turn down eager amateur commies all the time. They did NOT want overenthusiastic spies. They wanted reliable quiet people who could be called on RARELY, perhaps never. Their attitude was Don Corleone. Someday we may ask you for a favor.

Oaths were annoying to everyone, and especially annoying to veterans who had given part of their life or mind or body to defend this country. After a huge sacrifice that PROVED their loyalty, they resented being asked to prove it every month with an idiotic recital of words.

Cybersecurity doesn’t slow down REAL hackers. Real hackers are professionals, often working for real spy agencies. They don’t hack random web users, only important politicians or executives who might have real information. Tech-savvy people know that everyone is hacked all the time. Hacking is a universal constant, and real damage from a hack is extremely rare. You’ll only get in trouble if you’re OVERENTHUSIASTIC in responding to a Sucker Filter trick.

Oaths and cybersecurity serve only one purpose. Both are designed to instill doubt and fear in ordinary people, to keep our hatred pointed in the wrong direction.

In the 50s we were instructed to fear Russia, not the CIA. Now we’re instructed to fear Russia, not the CIA. The only difference is the instructing mechanism.

Next day, noticed a read from Rockville Maryland. Howdy there, Mr CIA! Nice to know that you’re always on the alert for new Russki subversives, always reading everything to be sure no Russki Existential Threats can prevert our vital bodily fluids! Fortunately our dear President will NOT cut your budget or eliminate your agency, since your agency pays Elon. Agencies that pay Elon grow, agencies that don’t pay Elon go. Simple gangster logic.
