General Delivery

Our idiot “mayor” and grotesque brainless “council” have passed a new “law” telling businesses to avoid asking for addresses on new employees. Supposedly this will make it easier to hire the homeless. I doubt it.

First reaction: WOKE SHIT!

Second reaction: Well, like much of the woke shit in education, this is actually a return to the pre-1980 way of doing things, before every fucking thing in life was “deregulated”, which really means fenced off with infinite regulations and litigations and fake “security” tyranny. Before the “rights” insanity turned education into a forced one-size-fits-all, it was easier to let different types of students learn in different ways. The old one room schoolhouse allowed older students to teach the younger ones, freeing the teacher to help the few who needed more serious help. IEPs weren’t needed because it was ALL individualized.

Casual labor and day labor rarely needed an address or an honest name. You did the work for a day, you got paid in real money at the end of the day. Plain and simple. Drifters were fairly common even in the 70s. A drifter who was known as a good skilled worker could always get work, even without credentials or addresses. He’d work for a while until he felt like going on a bender, then he’d be gone for a while.

LIFE WAS PERSONAL, not regulated and securitized and digitalized.

Drifters usually gave their address as General Delivery, which meant they picked up their mail at the Post Office. General Delivery still exists. Probably works better in a small town, but it’s still part of the Post Office services. Thanks, PO!

The no-address rule might pose more difficulties for a formalized job with a W4 and a SS number and so on. I wouldn’t be surprised if the thousand other idiotic mandates for employers strictly require a full digitally-proved and cellphone-guaranteed address.
