Nulling the balance

After midnight last Thursday I was in the living room screwing around with courseware. Suddenly I heard a scary noise CLOSE to the window, something like sliding and squeaking. It lasted for two minutes. It couldn’t have been an animal, but it didn’t make sense.

After daylight I went out to look, and found that some asshole had pried off the top horizontal boards on the southern section of my wooden fence. The action still doesn’t make sense except as pure random meanness.

I filed an online Malicious Mischief report, which won’t go anywhere. Later I went out to fix the neighbor’s side first for the sake of appearance. (Broken window theory etc.) As I went out, two cop cars were in the street next to the neighbor’s door. They saw me picking up the board and taking it in to drill new holes, but they didn’t honk or yell, so I figure they were interested in something else. Maybe the asshole committed another crime at the neighbor’s house, and the cops had been talking with the neighbor. Doesn’t matter.

What matters is restoring the balance, turning disorder into order. This morning I finished the task by replacing the board on my side, which was less urgent because nobody ever sees it.

Nulling the balance feels good, and it’s also good to know that I can still do tasks like this at age 75. My theme this year is toughening up after a year of overstress reduced my courage. Apparently Nature is trying to help me with the theme.
