Something reminded me of the word ranch. Decided to look up the etymology, since it doesn’t sound like other terms for land. It comes from the French military se ranger, meaning to pitch camp or set up a location, related to arrange.
Range, of course, has dozens of meanings in math and biology. It also means an open area of pasture. So the open range and the ranch are the same word.
In English ranger stayed in uniform. Rangers are a type of infantry, and Texas Rangers enforced the law on Texas Ranchers.
Related, learned from medieval peasant reading: Farm was originally the annual rent paid by the peasants to hold their shared ranch. When a range was at farm it was rented or leased.
Both terms were verbs that pitched camp and became nouns.
