A few years ago I started eating okra again. It was familiar and loved in Oklahoma, and I still love it. The frozen okra in Safeway comes from China! Why not from Dixie where it’s a common crop? I guess Dixie is still under a complete sanction and blockade. Our insane grudges never go away. We’ve been sanctioning Dixie since 1860, Russia since 1946, Cuba since 1960, Persia since 1980, dozens of other countries more recently. We never stop.
Rice from China would make sense. Okra doesn’t make sense. It began in Ethiopia, then spread around the Mediterranean. Europe picked it up around 1200 and started growing it and eating it. This hemisphere received it via the slave trade to Brazil and Dixie in the 1600s and 1700s, and the African folks in those areas continued growing and enjoying it. Okra was never native or popular in East Asia.
