Subscriber vs advertiser

Nice example of the difference between subscriber-driven and advertiser-driven media. When a business is focused on customers, it wants FEEDBACK from the customers.

Collectible Auto has been pure subscriber since 1985. They often fix a problem when enough readers dislike a new feature, or dislike the deletion of an old feature. They listen to serious criticism from readers, but ignore the usual quibbling and trolling.

The latest issue has an article on Ford’s Plexiglas tops in ’55-56, one of Drunken Henry II’s stupid ideas. The clear tops were never popular, selling only 3000 over both years. The reason is obvious. People who buy convertibles like the feeling of bugs in their eyes. Sedans are bought by people who don’t like bugs in their eyes. Very few people only want to be seen from above.

In a sidebar the author mentions some internal memos implying that the Plexiglas was available as an option in ’54. He begs readers who have firsthand experience at Ford, or who have owned or photographed a ’54, to send him the info.
