A long time ago I got tired of people who miss the point of AI.
You simply can’t argue or worry about the qualities and actions of the MACHINE.
There’s no line between ChatGPT and the endless history of predictive math. Life is infinitely full of predictive mechanisms. Most plants and animals predict daylight, moons and seasons, often in remarkably complex ways.
Beyond the basic operations of adding and multiplying, formal math was DEVELOPED to make predictions. Astronomers wanted to predict Eid or Easter or Eclipses, depending on faith. Businesses used math to predict how many socks they should make this year, or how many men they’d need to hire for next harvest. Gamblers developed statistics to predict the outcome of Roulette wheels. Our words for predict or guess are often mathy. We say I figure or I reckon. Twain’s old Missouri characters said I calculate.
Analog computers were mainly for prediction. The most elaborate ones can still do better than digital. The first real electronic digital computers were built to predict artillery trajectories. The military expanded that line in the late ’40s to Operational Analysis, the first direct ancestor of ChatGPT.
The new form of AI is the same type of tool.
It’s NOT unique by its internal properties. It’s unique because the people in charge of it are psychopaths. Everything they do is designed to harm and destroy and generate chaos.
If you defend AI, you are working for Altman whether you know it or not. If you “experiment” with AI, you are KNOWINGLY helping Altman to ruin civilization.
