We should be giving just as much respect to the regular postman as we do to police and fire. Obviously he doesn’t face life-or-death danger all the time, but he serves EVERYONE in a different way.
The regular carrier on a route KNOWS THE NEIGHBORHOOD BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE. He knows most people by name and face, and recognizes us when we’re not in the house. He often knows who’s in trouble, and notifies authorities when he spots something fishy.
My current PO obsession started when I noticed this total understanding. Then I watched the handful of old PO training films and remembered the year when I worked indirectly for the PO. Then I found the new podcasts.
In earlier and better times the beat cop had a similar level of knowledge, and sometimes local politicians. Of course we call those ward heelers “corrupt” because they were ACTUAL democracy. The “good government” movement made government evil.
Repooflicans have hated the PO forever, and have talked about destroying it forever. They also hated cops and sometimes defunded them locally. Dems were late to this game. Repooflicans also hate Social Security because it’s good and useful. Demon Elon was the first Repooflican to get serious about obliterating everything good. He was simply implementing what the party has wanted for 70 years.
