A few days ago I noted some positive developments in correct handling of Psychopath Trump. Some local elites are learning how to help their own communities, some aren’t.
Here’s another some are / some aren’t story, seen via Nieman Lab.
Cutting off public broadcasting funds was the right thing to do, even if Trump did it. Most NPR stations are already a mix of commercial and crowdfunding, and they can easily make up for the small loss of subsidy. They will then be FREE of future political influence, and can turn as partisan as they want. The head of NPR first played the stupid fight game, then settled down into the more realistic method of handling a psychopath. Build up your own strengths so you DON’T NEED HIM.
Smaller stations serving small towns don’t have sponsor resources, and they’re in more trouble. Per this story, Congress made a deal to support NPR stations serving tribal areas, since tribal areas are a federal responsibility.
But there is one OBVIOUS source of funds for those stations. Most tribes are RICH. Some have been rich with oil for many decades, most now have casinos. Casino tribes are rich enough to be the main influencer of city and state governments. They could easily support their OWN stations, even turn them into parts of the casino business empire. In the 1800s tribes owned newspapers; why not radio stations now?
