It’s hardly news that tech algorithms are insane, designed to drive us insane. Here’s an outstanding example.
I wrote a glowing Yelp review for the taxi service I use when I’m not in good shape. He does a splendid job of dealing with my elderly slowness, and always remembers everything. (Similar to mail carriers in that way.)
Yelp decided on its own that I’m in San Francisco, not Spokane. Since the taxi service is clearly in Spokane, this mislocation might make the review look fake. I’ve never been in California at all, let alone San Francisco. There’s no web-related reason to assume I’m there. Other algorithms come closer, placing me in various parts of Washington.
I tried to edit the profile, switched it to Spokane, but the review still says Frisco. Now I’m getting promos from Yelp about special deals in Frisco!
