Not quite the right target

This author at First Things has an interesting proposal. The new pope, who started his rule with a powerful prophecy against Demon Altman, should set up a new Knights Templar to evangelize tech leaders.

The Catholic Church’s urgent task extends far beyond merely inviting tech entrepreneurs, innovators, or tech investors to Vatican conferences on AI and technological challenges. It should seek, instead, to evangelize them, teach them respect for human dignity, and inculcate appreciation of Western tradition.

Focusing on leaders is guaranteed to fail. The top layers in tech already have a powerful evangelical religion in Effective Altruism, so there’s no chance of converting them. Math is their god, and William MacAskill is their prophet. They believe firmly that all Negative Externalities (non-billionaires) must be eradicated from the universe.

Knights Techlar would work better if it followed the Mutual Benefit Society model, as the first Leo did. Skip the unsalvageable top ranks. Work with the lower levels, the coders and beta testers and graphic artists. Emphasize videogaming, which already has a strong historical and religious tendency, fascinated with older ways of living and thinking.
