Verrrry interestink but pointless

This is an interesting development but it won’t make any difference because it’s only in two states. Legislatures in NY and Mass are trying to put limits on web connected devices, requiring manufacturers to make specific promises and keep the promises.

1. Disclose a minimum guaranteed support timeframe to consumers before they purchase an electronic devices, informing would-be owners of the period for which they will provide security and software updates.

2. Notify consumers when their devices are nearing the end of life and provide guidance on how to handle the device’s end of life.

3. Inform customers about features that will be lost as a result of the end of life declaration as well as potential vulnerabilities and security risks that may arise after software support ends.

As I’ve been repeating forever, data webs are NOT new, and connected devices are NOT new. Bell Tel and Western Union were running full-scale webs under STRICT government regulation, long before the DARPA web replaced them. New features were introduced slowly and carefully, making sure that the phones and exchanges would be ready when the new feature came out. It took 60 years to fully replace Mabel the operator by direct dialing in all areas.

We didn’t see most of the subscription-only features on residential phones. Business phone systems, teletype terminals, and mainframes often had optional controls or capabilities enabled by monthly subscriptions.

FCC watched these systems closely, making sure each addition or change or deletion was needed.

In 1950, Bell and WU were working together to build a national microwave network for video, the precursor of the cell-phone network. FCC wanted to examine and approve all aspects of the collaboration.

In 1958 Grandpa Bezos decided to take the web out of Western Union’s hands and into the pure untrammeled control of Deepstate. The DARPA web is explicitly free from all regulations, so Grandson Bezos and his Silicon Valley fraternity can destroy civilization without any monitors.
