Taking out the trash this morning, I brushed against the overgrown windbreak. As usual, thought I should try to trim it back. Suddenly noticed I was face to face with a TINY bird in the branches. He didn’t seem bothered by the closeness, just continued walking along the branch. TINY: less than two inches long excluding the tail, and the head was the same size as the body. Like a pair of feathered walnuts. He was taking advantage of his size, working between close branches where a sparrow or robin couldn’t fit.
Looking up, probably a chestnut-backed chickadee. The coloring looks like the third picture at that website. Sources say the species isn’t afraid of people, which certainly fits.
Later, the appearance might be more like the Black-Capped Chickadee. I have zero knowledge of birds, so can’t be sure.
